Quick fix

Now that we've all started working (for a year or two now) we're too busy and exhausted daily to cook, organise makan makan trips successfully due to our antisocial oncall timings or even update this blog!

So I thought I'd share with you what lazy Kenn and Eve normally do if they miss Nam heong chicken rice.

From LayIn we found that instant chicken rice mixes are available in our Chinatown ! There's a variety of different mixes but choose the ones which has a mix for the rice and chicken.

All you need is the mix, rice, chicken, cucumber and vege (for a balanced diet :p). The rest of it is as easy as ABC..

Just follow the instructions! I normally like to cook the rice first and the key is not to put too much water & only half the mix in. Otherwise it'll get too oily. Then simmer the chicken in hot water with mix inside for approx 20mins. Depending on which mixes you buy, they may provide the chilli and ginger paste too.

The key to yummy and smooth aka 'wat' chicken is to submerge the chicken in cold water first before serving.. So don't forget this step. You could cut the cucumber into slices to decorate the place. Once you've done so, pour the soya with sesame oil mix on the chicken and voila, its ready to serve!

Seafood in Pantai Seafood Restaurant is a must in kl. Why?....
1) coz the food's superb!
2) the seafood is very fresh, coz they're all still swimming 5mins ago
3) the price's reasonable
4) the environment is not bad
5) the service is quite good
6) not only they hav seafood, they hav other types of dishes too

they hav all kinds of seafood here, ranging from the crab to abalone. name it, n there'll hav it! here's a few of their sedap dishes...

their famous cupcakes are superb! the icing is so smooth n it's not too sweet, just nice.

the most important is the cake. it's flavoured the same flavour as the icing. not too sweet n also very soft n moist n smooth. love it! cant comepare this cupcake with others coz others normally it's just vanilla as the cake.

thumbs up for this place! a must go!

you know.. the 'craving' days? happens when you've been away from home, at least 6 mths or more.. when even your own cooking is no match for all the mouth watering conveniences at the nearby hawker stalls that i so often take for granted when i had it, back then. *sobs* even when i'm sick, like now. i still yearn for that hot bowl of.. (fill in the blanks) anything really.

so featuring my list of "cravings" in no particular order..

aiyooo final year medical student syndrome we must all be having. poor blog has been abandoned for eons! anyways, trying to kick start it again.

so being in 6th year, without exams and all.. supposed to be a cruisy year right? WRONG! we've been busier than ever (imho anyway), less cooking (sobs), and more dining out (so expensive!!). so i guess i can feature some of the places i've been frequenting much.

one of them, is none other than Cafe Kowloon. if you asked me about this place 2.5 years ago, i'll go YUCK! bleh~ but now, the taste has kinda grow on me. and they have quite a few signature dishes that i find palatable now :D at a reasonable price but more importantly, opens till like 2 am! woo~ maklumlah, adelaide no mamak, no 24 hours whatsoever kan..

what's good here? their congeee is a sure win especially during winter :) nothing beats a hot bowl of porridge with yau char kuai! the fried rice was so-so. "chiu pai" (signature) dishes include crispy beef, butter chicken, shandong chicken, "kam ngan dan poh choy" and creamy egg white! but since it was just me & chris that night, we just had ala carte. oh yeah! not forgetting their beef hor fun.. mm mm..

winter's not doing my weight any good :(

cafe kowloon is located near chinatown, along gouger st, west end. price is reasonable, taste wise pretty good, service is fair (and if they're in a good mood, they'll give you a free bowl of 'tong sui' too!)

Wow, i'm so stirred and encouraged to see so many of you guys cultivating all the skills since we went abroad. Nevertheless, here's some attempts i took when i went over to Adelaide in 2 weeks ago.
Ricotta Cheese Pancake - made by me & Su Chuen. Recipe, er, gotta ask chuen. basically you need some flour, ricotta cheese of course, egg white first, then add the yoke, erm.. what else.. the finishing and deco - berries, butter, er maple syrup if you somehow find a bottle in your cupboard, & yogurt. Yum!

OKOK. this is brocolli salad! i know this. basically you need brocolli, nuts, bacons & mayo. Cooking instructions:-
1. Wash your brocolli until super clean. Coz in this recipe, we are not cooking the brocolli. trust me, it's nice. & of course, cut it mouth size...
2. mix mayo into the brocolli... not too much, not so wet le k..
3. open assorted nuts package - almonds, what else ar.. oh yah.. RAISINS AS WELL.. and then mix with the salad
4. lastly, while doing all these, make sure u cook your diced bacons (can be in mircowaves - depending on ur microwave strength - 5-7mins til its dried and hard so that it is crispy)
5. mix it all together and its ready to serve your appetite! how easy right?

Lasagna!
Ingredients - lasagna sheet, lotsa shreded cheese, lasagna sauce/pasta sauce, flour, butter, milk, salt, pepper, herbs to your liking... erm.. what else.. mince meat - beef, chicken, pork

1. fried garlic & onions together with meat, then add pasta sauce, pepper & salt & herbs.. once ready, set it aside.
2. Start feeding the sauce on your baking tray, & layer it with the sheet. repeat this process until 80% of the tray height. (leave some space for the topping)
3. Make the cream sauce.. First melt butter on low fire, and then add some flour and stir it until the flour sorta merge with the butter. then add milk and keep stirring.. then add cheese and stir stir stir at low fire.. the whole process is to make sure the sauce is equally blend and thickened. it requires some muscle to make sure it thickens.. so KEEP STIRRING..
4. once its thicken, pour the cream sauce over the lasagna, and then add heaps of cheese on top.
5. place it in oven or convection microwave at 180deg for 40 mins/until cheese brown.

hehehe.. miss u guys.. cant wait to hang out and makan again end of this year!

The vanilla cupcakes

I came across a recipe recently and decided to try it out yesterday.. This time I tried baking, Vanilla Cupcakes or as they call it Fairycakes!

It was a quite successful.. though I've put in more butter than recommended for both the cupcake and icing. The cupcake turn out just nice for me, as I love butter, but the icing didn't frost well. Didn't buy an icing set as well.. so I came up with a 'durian like' (as Kenn calls it) with colourful sugar sticks as decorations instead ;p

Method:
Preheat oven to 177 degrees C and line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.

For the Cupcakes:
Cream 113 grams of unsalted butterand 130 grams of granulated white sugar until light and fluffy.
Add 3 eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Beat in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl whisk together 210g of flour, 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture, butter mixture and 60ml of milk, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour.
Evenly fill the muffin cups with the batter.
Bake until nicely browned and let it cool.
Then frost with icing.

For the Frosting:
Cream 113 grams of butter until smooth and well blended.
Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
And with the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in 230 gramsof icing sugar.
Add 2 tablespoon of milk and beat on high speed until frosting is light and fluffy.

I'm finally back in my apartment for real! Since I've shifted into this apartment, I haven't really been staying in it.. it's because of the summer holidays and my O&G posting. So when I got back, I decided to make full use of my kitchen (yippie, I have my very own kitchen now.. only shared between me, my housemate and occassionally Kenn ;p) and attempted cooking!

PS: Remember.. Evie never cooks from scratch.. instant noodles and salads are her normal meals.

So what did I attempt to cook?
1) Beef Rendang
2) Belacan Kangkung
3) Red Bean Soup

I must say, the most difficult part of cooking these two dishes is not the actual cooking process.. it's buying the ingredients. I visited all the chinese grocery shops in Chinatown and another one near the university to get most of my ingredients.. but I couldn't find the most important one, BELACAN! So I bought some fish paste as a substitute.

The cooking process took quite long though.. because I had to grind every lil thing like onions, ginger and red onions individually because I did not have a blender but it was a success and I manage to cook up these 2 dishes plus a dessert for Kenn and my housemates.

EeWan boiled some chicken soup and Kenn cooked something too.. you should ask him what he cooked ;p

Belacan kangkung

So what do we need?
1) Beef Rendang
1½ lb beef cut into 1½ to 2-inch chunks
4 cups thick coconut milk
1 cup fresh coconut, finely grated
2 stalks lemongrass, slightly crushed
2-3 turmeric leaves
3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tsp sugar salt and pepper

To blend:
4-5 tbsp chili paste
1½-inch fresh ginger, peeled, sliced
1-inch galangal [lengkuas in Malay], peeled, sliced
1½ inch fresh turmeric root [kunyit basah in Malay], peeled, sliced
2 tsp coarse salt

To Prepare :
Season beef with salt and pepper, marinate for at least 30 mins
Using a mortar & pestle or blender grind galangal, ginger, turmeric root, chili paste and kosher salt into a spice paste
In a dry heated pan, toast the finely grated coconut [meat] over low heat, keep stirring until golden brown. Allow to cool, then using a mortar & pestle, pound into a paste [called kerisik in Malay]
Heat wok on high, stir-fry spice paste 2-3 mins, add coconut milk, reduce heat and slowly bring to a gentle boil; stir often
Add beef and slow boil for 10 mins
Add lemongrass stalk, turmeric leaves [or kaffir lime leaves; or lime zest], sugar and season with salt and pepper
Reduce heat to low, uncovered, simmer for 1-1½ hrs; stir often with a spatula [be sure to 'scrape' the bottom of wok], add a little water if it starts to dry up too quickly]
Add the toasted coconut paste [kerisik] during the last 30 mins of cooking
When the beef is very tender - the gravy, thickens and oil starts to float on top - remove from heat and discard the lemongrass stalks and turmeric leaves
Serve Beef Rendang with steamed rice, Nasi Lemak [Coconut Rice] or Lontong, a Malay Rice Roll

2) Belacan Kangkung
1lb Kangkung [also called Water Spinach or Water Convolvulus], washed well in water, drained and cut into 2-3 inch lengths
3 tbsp peanut or vegetable oil
1½ tsp sugar salt

To blend:
2 tbsp dried shrimp
3 tbsp or to taste, chili paste
6 shallots, peeled
4 cloves garlic, peeled
2 tsp belacan, also spelt belachan or blacan [dried shrimp paste]

To Prepare :
Soak dried prawns in hot boiling water till softened, drain, reserve some of the liquid
Using a mortar & pestle or blender, grind the softened dried prawns, shallots, garlic, belacan, chili paste into a chunky paste
Heat wok on high, add 2 tbsp peanut or vegetable oil, stir-fry the paste for 1-2 mins, reduce heat cook until quite toasted and turns a shade darker - careful not to burn!
Add the kangkung, sugar, and salt if necessary [*Note: belacan is salty]
Stir-fry on high heat, about 2-3 mins
Dish onto a serving dish while it is still quite crisp and serve hot immediately

The outcome was great.. I was worried at first that I've made a mistake and added too much coconut milk, made Thai Red Curry instead.. but after letting it simmer for 1 1/2 hours the sauce dried up and became rendang sauce. On the other hand, I put too little coconut milk and the dish was a bit too spicy for the rest of the people. The Belacan Kangkung turned out just nice, and finally I get to eat a belacan kangkung that's spicy!

The Perfect Half-boiled Egg :)

hehe. decided to post this up as i've just had one of my most perfect (by accident) half boiled egg ever!!!!!!!!!!

replaceD :) thanks again to vkeong.com but this my own reproduced picture for now..

so how did i manage to make this perfect half boiled egg?? (usually mine's too runny, or too cooked :( i guess this time it's thanks to serendipity!) ok here's how.

1) place egg into a deep dish/bowl. pour boiling water until egg is completely submerged in water.
2) eat my pasta (that i've already made. but thinks that i may still be hungry after that) while browsing facebook.
3) and i was right. i was still hungry after that bowl of pasta. so voila, i crack open the egg, and it is the most beautiful looking thing i've ever seen in my entire life. ok i'm exaggerating, but it is my best attempt. eat with buttered toast, and you're in heaven. almost.

**just in case facebook surfing time, and pasta eating time varies between individuals..... i reckon i took abt 7-8 minutes. haha~!**

To support Christine attempt.. to revive the blog ;p *I'm sorry, I'm one of the culprits who've left the blogging world for ages* I've decided to post something about my MakanMakan experience on the blog. Let's talk about one of the restaurants Li, Jay, CYin, Sze Siew and I visited together this summer!

Presenting...

Rainbow Seafood Restaurant,
16-20, 23-24, Fist St.
Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island, HK
Tel: 2982810

This is one out of the dozens seafood restaurants found in HK's famous seafood island.. Lamma Tou. Heard about it from Kenn Foong, when he went on his HK-Macau trip with his mum two years ago.

What's so special about it?
-They provide free shuttle services (Central-TsimShaTsui-Lamma Island and returns)
-'Seafood Expert', Mr. Lim Kenn Foong says it's SUPER GOOD!
-It's CHEAP! (to HK ppl's standards, did a price check with a couple of my HK friends and they think it's super cheap)

So when we arrived in HK, I gave them a call to book seats on the ferry and a table at the restaurant.

Experience 1 (The Ferry)
Service: 100 marks.. We left the hotel quite late that night (I was taking a nap, c'mon I was ill that day!), so we hopped into a cab and rushed over to the TST Ferry Pier. Problem is we couldn't find the jetty! By the time I called the restaurant get the number of the person at the TST Pier it was already past departure time. I managed to get the person, she gave me the directions but she said we'll most probably will have to take the next ferry which is in half an hour's time! With a bit of persuasion "M'sian style".. if you know what I mean ;p she agreed to wait for us. We were running so late that she actually called me back, located us, rushed us into the ferry and bang.. doors shut & off we go! But it was very kind of her to have waited for us.

Experience 2 (Rainbow Seafood Restaurant)
Service at the restaurant was really good too.. we didn't know what to order so the guy took charge. He brought us to the aquariums, asked us to choose the type of seafood we'd like to have, got our budget and he handled the rest. Not sure if he 'tipu-ed' us because we're tourists...but the food turned out to be delicious and it was really cheap too, for what we had.

Dish 1: Scallops with garlic & dung fun

With 5 dishes, a fried rice and desserts.. this meal costs us less than HKD$1500 (Sorry, I can't remember the exact sum nor the exact names of each dish, told ya I was ill). Every single dish was fresh and I think they're really delicious.. though the 'Jiu Yim' ones were a bit too salty to eat on it's own ;p

Experience 3 (Ferry ride back to Kowloon Island)
This time the ferry was full.. we had to sit on the upper deck of the ferry which is an opened area. We got to enjoy the cold air and strong winds of the sea as we head back to HK.. and also the beautiful night view of HK Island and Kowloon as well as the Tsing Ma Bridge!

Banana Leaf Rice @ Bangsar

First time i've tried banana leaf rice among the 4 of us there that day.. paiseh. So i was a bit enthusiastic and jakun. hmm. and so i decided to blog it!

No sharing of food, so all of us ordered one each. and i finally had my 'limau ais' drink to go with it.

Comes with 3 types of vege for sides, a salad kind, a fried vege and a deepfried in batter bittergourd. yummy. And the rice, comes with choice of 3 kinds of curry to pour over it- fish curry, chicken curry and dal. Mine(pic) is fish curry. spicy, i like!

btw, it also comes with papadum and we ordered an extra mutton curry. which were both delicious as well! cant remember how much it was.. but affordable mamak price (rite?) and altho i wasnt very hungry i finished up my rice. service-wise, thumbs up as well. hahaha.

and crab again..hehe. ths time, this crab is from this famous crab restaurant in kepong. wa, this place...i arrived at 7 something n it was packed wit so many ppl...n i had to line up just to get a table. but i must say, it's so worth the wait! coz the crab here is soooooo gooooooddddd!!!!! famous for their cheese crab or salted egg crab, i ordered the salted egg crab. yummy!

introducing restaurant Din Tai Fung, in Garden's ....

the beef la mien was delicious! compared to Dragon i, the noodles are the same. but the soup here comparing the same flavour there, is very different. both hav their own special taste. both oso nice la hehe :)

siew long pau here oso very good. but i still like the siew long pau in Dragon i a bit more, coz there the one not so strong the smell..hehe...

this fried rice may look simple, but then when it comes to ur table, ur mouth start to water coz it smells so 'hiong'. then it's oso yummy yum. the rice summore it's the jap rice..round round...but it's not sticky la. so just nice!

yummy yum. this is marmalade's delicious carbonara. not too rich, just nice. coz most of the time, carbonara are too rich that when u eat more than 3 spoons u'll feel 'gelak'. but this one however is just nice, that i could finish most of it :)

my friends ordered chicken pie n beef pie each. the beef pie's good, but chicken pie here's a bit tasteless.

n here's 2 old pics of 2 other great delicious dish that's served here. this pic was taken during our breakfast few months ago ;) (wit seyin,eve,anu,shang). the cupcakes are yummy yum :) i think i can eat 10 of these in 1 shot hehe.n this mushroom spagetti, oso supereb!

Triple Chocolate Brownies

This is simple, quick and yummy! ;)

Ingredients:
275g plain chocolate
275g unsalted butter
85g pecans, broken into pieces (I used hazelnuts)
85g milk chocolate, cut into large chunks
85g white chocolate, cut into large chunks
175g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla essence
325g caster sugar

Method:
1) Preheat oven to 170 degrees C. Line a tin with lightly buttered greaseproof paper/ foil.
2) Put the plain chocolate and butter in a large bowl, place over pan of simmering water and allow to melt.
3) Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl and set aside. Remove the melted chocolate from the heat and stir in the sugar. Add eggs and vanilla essence. Fold in the flour, nuts and chocolate.
4) Pour the chocolate mixture into the prepared tin. Place in oven and bake fore 20-25 minutes. The top should be firm, but the inside should feel soft when cooked. Allow to cool in the tin. Remove the brownies from the tin and cut them.
5) Serving suggestion: Eat with ice cream and/or chocolate/ toffee sauce! XD

Meatball Spaghetti

Serves 2.

Pasta
200g spaghetti
olive oil
salt

Sauce [cheat]
1/2 bottle tomato based pasta sauce of your choice (i used Leggo's Bolognese with mushroom)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 brown onion, chopped
1/4 stick medium carrot, grated
olive oil

Meatballs
250g minced meat of choice (i used beef)
1/4 cup bread crumbs
2 tbsp milk
1/4 stick medium carrot, grated
1 egg
1/2 brown onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
dash of parsley
dash of oregano
dash of salt and pepper

Directions:
1) Boil spaghetti with hot water for 10 mins. Rinse with cold water. Drain. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Toss. Set aside.
2) Sauteed onions and garlic with olive oil. Add carrots. Toss. Add in tomato based sauce, bring to a boil. simmer on low heat. Cover.
3) For meatballs, mixed all the above ingredients until it forms a consistent paste. using 2 tablespoons, shape mixture into a ball and pan-fry with olive oil. Brown all sides. Place meatballs in simmering sauce. and cover for 5 minutes.
4) Using the same pan from frying the meatballs, toss cooked spaghetti from (1). Pour in meatballs and sauce. Toss.
5) Serve with parmesan cheese and basil leaf (which i sadly do not have hence the plain presentation :P).

really easy! try it :)

seremban's always famous for their crabs, donno why. always thought the crabs here are nothing great compared to kl's crabs, summore the prices of crab in seremban is nearly double the crab price in kl. but i tried this super delicious crab that day in seremban. sorry guys, the pic doesnt look that nice, coz i took the shot from my phone. but anyways, the 'siew hai'...ketam bakar, here is damn good. it smells so good when it's brought to ur table. n when u bite thru the meat, it's so juicy n sweet that u feel like ur eating crab in wonderful crabland :) the crab was so fresh, that the meat was tender n juicy. seriously, guys, we must go eat this siew hai when u guys come back. it's super good. totally recomend it.

the shop's just a shed beside the road. nothing great, but it's always crowded with ppl if u come late. the food's fantastic thou...that's the most important thing right? :) they also serve porridge, 'lou si fun', laksa, ikan bakar and sotong bakar there.

505g semisweet chocolate chips

Method:
1) Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. In microwave or over a double boiler, melt unsweetened chocolate and butter together, stirring occasionally until smooth. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; set aside.
2) In a medium bowl, beat sugar, eggs and vanilla until light. Mix in the chocolate mixture until well blended. Stir in the sifted ingredients alternately with sour cream, then mix in the chocolate chips. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
3) Bake for 8-10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.

I think I am not only in Medical School in Belfast, but in Culinary and Baking School as well. It's just that I will not graduate with a certificate from the latter. Whenever we celebrate our friends' birthdays, we actually bake the cakes ourselves, because cakes are just too expensive to be bought here! So here I am to share 2 recipes which are my favourites so far...

Strawberry CakeIngredients:
400g white sugar
225g butter, softened
4 eggs
400g sifted cake flour
10g baking powder
240ml whole milk
15ml vanilla extract
2 packs of fresh strawberries - make into puree.
Whipping cream
Icing sugar
Strawberry gelatin

Method:
1) Preheat the oven to 170 degrees C. Grease and flour 2 tins. (to make it 2 layers!)
2) In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs 1 at a time, mixing well after each. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter alternatively with milk. Blend in vanilla and strawberry puree. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans.
3) Bake for 20-30 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cake to cool in pans for 10 minutes before topping out to cool completely.
4) Place thickly sliced strawberries with whipping cream in between the 2 cakes.

For the puree - crush fresh strawberries and mix it with icing sugar.

For the decoration and presentation I used whipping cream, sliced strawberries and strawberry gelatin. It can be changed according to your preferences!

Chocco-Mocha Caramel Cake
Ingredients:
2 tsp instant coffee granules/ powder
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp hot water
175g softened butter
175g golden caster sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp golden syrup
200g self-raising flour
4 tbsp milk
2 x 50g chocolate caramel bars (I used Cadbury Caramel Bars)

For the icing
2 x 50g chocolate caramel bars
50g butter
2 tbsp milk
100g icing sugar, sifted

Method:
1)Preheat oven - 160 degrees C. Butter the cake tin. Line the base with baking parchment.
2) Measure coffee and cocoa into a cup, add hot water, mix into a smooth paste. Put butter, sugar, eggs, syrup, flour, milk and cocoa paste in a large mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Break caramel bars into sections and stir into mixture.
3) Turn the mixture into prepared tin and smooth the top. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until top springs back when you press it lightly. Cool for 5 minutes, turn out, peel off lining paper, leave to cool.
4) Make icing - break up caramel bars and put in a small pan with butter and milk. Gently heat until smooth, stirring all the time, then remove from heat and stir in the icing sugar. Leave to cool until it thickens to leave a trail when you lift the spoon. Put cake on a serving plate, spread icing over the top, letting it fall softly down the sides, leave to set.

I used caster sugar and chocolate chips for decoration. Again, that's up to you own preferences.

That's all folks! I thought the latter was easier to make, but do give both a try, if you guys are free! ;)

Europa serves traditional and authentic italian food. Chris and I tried the blue "something" crab pasta (sorry-lah can't remember) which was their chef's specialty and good 'ol pepperoni pizza! the taste is heavenly.. *drools* thinking of it makes me wanna go there and have dinner NOW!

prices are average, as you would expect in an italian restaurant (AUD 15-20/per pax).

sadly, the service wasn't as fantastic as their food were (i bet my sentence is grammatically incorrect *sigh*)

great location, just opposite the tram stop, very near the beach. definitely worth a try!!

check out this delicious donuts ppl! i was walking around in pavilion yesterday when i saw a long long line outside this shop name J.Co Donuts and coffee. i thought...hmmm...must be good stuff. so knowing me..i joined the line to buy some donuts.

yummy yum! it taste so soft...it melts in ur mouth. the pastry is so amazing. it's something like big apple, but even softer! n the choc was so good...not too thick or too thin..not too sweet, just nice! the almons were amazing. the best was still the original flavour thou...i think it's even better then krispy kreme :)

guys, u must seriously try one. i wanted more after that but the line was even longer then. so i think i'll go back another time..hehe ;)

It's not the only of it's kind here. There's Wagamama, Fuzion, well the list goes on. It's just that Kailyn and I decided to celebrate finishing our SSC report. (Hard work! we sacrificed CNY for it... starting serious work from cnyday1!) wanted to eat at Yo!Sushi, sth like SushiKing/GEnki kind, which unfortunately, was closed at 7? So early. i gues it closes when 'Selfridges' closes. And i totally regret FORGETTING my camera. these are taken wit my poor 2mp w910i..

Fresh Eastern Cooking. Their menu, quite pretty. Yasai Gyoza. vegetarian gyoza with water chestnut and such.
This was so-so. maybe the meat one wud've been nicer?
This is my japanese udon wit chicken, red pepper, beansprouts,
and rice wine. not bad. pass i give 3/5. GBP6.95
this is kailyn's indon savoury. it's called 'Gado-gado'. cute name?
and looks really healthy too rite? The spicy peanut paste was damn good!! GBP5.95 this one can get 4.5/5! of cos for those cow stomachs one maybe not filling enuf. ekeke.
and Ta-Da!!!!! we were sooooo delighted to find this on dessert menu!!
Bubur Pulut Hitam!!!! GBP3.25. Super delicious, it deserves 5/5!!

So special tat we just had to take pic wit it!!

oh... and the green tea was superb too. 5/5. Service was 4/5 (sometimes very hard to catch their attention, BUT very very friendly service!)

Apparently they also had singapore laksa, char kuey teow, mee goreng, indon fried rice, some other korean cuisine and a tampopo platter which has like, tempuras for sharing..saw the nex table eating looks pretty delicious. I will definitely go back there to try other food, even if not, just for the pulut hitam i def will! (oh, there's 20% student disc too!)

Matcha (Green Tea) Ice Cream

i've got this crazy green tea ice cream cravings lately.. the taste is refreshing, not-too-sweet and creamy, makes you wanting for more, more, MORE!! green tea ice cream goes very well with red bean, mochi and spongecake (as in parfait).

so far, only 3 places managed to satisfy my cravings!

Mini Sardine Puffs - in an attempt to revive the blog.

all of us lives away from home, chasing our dreams.. cooking seems like a hassle sometimes. here's a quick and easy snack to make!! :) you know why it's so easy?????

the answer is right before your very eyes!!! yes.. pampas puff pastry! the greatest invention, since.. mobile phones :P

the filling is as simple as ABC!!

all you need is:
a can of sardines (in tomato sauce) - mashed
half a big onion - thinly sliced
chilli - sliced (you can use chilli powder instead, if you want)
juice from one big lime

for the glaze-beat one egg with 1 tbsp milk

sauteed onions in 2 tbsp of oil. add mashed sardines, chilli and lime juice. bring to a boil. cool mixture.

(alternatively i saw this new ayam brand spicy lime canned sardine which can be used as a substitute - the simple solution!!)

preheat fan-forced oven to 200 deg C. cut a rectangular piece of pastry say 4X8cm. place filling in the centre, fold in both ends. glaze the top of the pastry. bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Ipoh Craze

My list of accomplishments when I went back to Ipoh for the last time before I flew off. Aunt decided that listing down on my litle cousin's whiteboard was the best way to make sure we don't leave out any of my favourites. The following torturous pics are not in any particular order.

Funny mountain Pak Pak (White white) which is Tau Foo Fa and Soy Milk. I love the way it just slithers down your throat. Smoother than a baby's bum. The best thing is that you can drive in, wait your turn behind somebody else's car for someone to take your orders.

Ipoh white coffee and Yin Yong toast. Somehow KL's coffee doesn't give as much aroma as Ipoh's especially when its iced. Plus, the toast just melts in your mouth. You have to be careful to not to hold it too hard or else it'll just crumble away.

I know Pro-Penangites will defend their laksa but after tasting this, you might change your mind. Ipoh people like to eat laksa with Foo Pei. Gives the extra kick!

My favourite dessert of all time is the Green Town Cendol. I love that its more water than ice and the cendol's not frozen. Not too much santan and not too much gula melaka makes eating this really really lovely.

Again something the Penangites will like to contest. This is Ipoh's Char Kuey Teow style. Fry the egg in the wok first than kuey teow on top. Serve with homemade chilli-belacan sauce. Yummy!

This is none other than the famous Kai See Hor Fun in old town which my uncle and aunt absolutely loves. I think the secret lies in the soup and the fine texture of the noodles. Let's just hope somebody inherits the recipe and continues the trade.

Our taugeh has got to be the fattest, the shortest and the juiciest ones you'll ever taste. I can eat this alone without anything. Sad to say, I haven't found any in Liverpool, not even in Chinatown.

Chee Cheong Fan is not one of my favourites and I would never order it in KL but in Ipoh, its a different story.

For dinner, we popped by to Kok Thai restaurant near Kinta City for this. The star of the meal. Cod fish fried with soy sauce. There is an art to frying this fish. Too short a time, it'll be too raw and too long, it'll be too dry. The chefs here does it just nice so that the skin is crisp but the fish meat is still supple.

The famous curry mee which I posted some time ago and I'll always ask for more mint leaves to go with it. Usually by ten in the morning, the uncle and aunty is already cleaning up their store cos everything is sold out.

I'm not a fan of dim sum but Foh San holds a special place in my heart. When I was young, I remember being dragged out of bed together with all my other sleepy head cousins just so that we could get a table here and we would wake up to the smell of har mai, egg tarts and the voices of waitresses. The reason why I didn't post a pic of the dim sum is cos it dissapeared before I realised I haven't snapped any pics.

Chinese style Apams which you rarely find in KL. Its a much lighter version compared to its Malay cousin which we usually find in KL. It makes an excellent supper.

I'm finally done and there's nothing else to say except that we the overseas members shall now join in suffering together. Absence does make the tummy growl louder ;)

Of Coffee Shops and Chicken Chops!

The title was from a newspaper cutting we saw in the place we went on Saturday morning!We went to the heart of KL for breakfast at a famous restaurant, or rather, coffee shop.It's none other than Yut Kee. We had to wait in line even though we arrived at 8.30am!Being so famous and established, I would imagine a lot of old people. But it was filled with youngsters and working adults!So, while waiting, we just snapped a couple of harmless photos! Here are the girls!Me and Emily!You can roughly gauge the age of the restaurant. The fierce fella in the portrait is the owner. And the same owner is the uncle in the newspaper cutting! I'd say a rough 40 years? I don't know...Me and Shirlyn. Look at the extensive menu behind us! This kopitiam is famous for a lot of things~!One of such things is the Roti Babi. Unlike it's name, the dish is a really tasty treat!Nothing like coffee to kick start my day!Famous carcinogenic toast, with their self-made kaya and butter!And then there's the famous half-boiled eggs!After all this, we are still not full!We added Loh Mee. The soup is simply delicious!And then we had Pork Chop as well! If our stomachs were not so small, there were plenty more for us to try!A toast with coffee! The mamak epidemic has engulfed Malaysia unsuspectingly! Thousands of Malaysians will flock in the mamak almost every night, more when there are football matches going on! Mamaks are equivalent to fast food restaurants, but at a much lower price!

And the most famous mamak in Sri Petaling is: Ajimal Razim!!!The only mamak in Sri Petaling which has a branch within a 500 meter radius! I guess it is to serve the overwhelming amount of people that comes not only from IMU, but the residents around as well! Evelyn and I, being Sri Petaling dwellers, decided to satisfy our mamak cravings!

On 21.07.07, Li and Evie and I met up to have a good chat since we haven't done tat for a long time, and it's so hard to catch Li free on a weekend, and i hvnt seen her tho i'm back from australia for like, 2 weeks?

So Li came and pick me up, we met up with Eve at Bangsar Village 2 since it was raining outside. my original idea was find a shop in telawi and just go inside. We decided to try out Banquet, situated on the 2nd floor since it looked really cool, it was surrounded by small potted bushes around it, fake ones of course. Like, an english garden tea house concept. Eve and Li saw Soong Ai Ling eating here the last time they came too.

Hey y'all. Looks like everyone has been dormant for a while. But it's ok. We are all busy in our very own ways.

But before I become busy again, I've came up with what seems to be the first prototype of the Makan Club logo! Tell me if you guys like it!It's a vintage logo. So like any vintage logo, there will be some kind of meaning behind the images in the logo. I'll try my very best to explain my creation:
The M and the C - Are obviously the initials of Makan Club.
The Crown - symbolises that we will eat like Kings! (and Queens!)
The Shield - symbolises righteousness and integrity.
The Caduceus - which is stuck to the crown, states that we come from a Medical background.
The Arrows - shooting upwards, means that we are aiming higher, and will always seek to improve.
The Curly Ribbons - symbolises our never-ending strength and unity amongst Makan Club members.
The Rays - at the back, symbolises our internationalism, spreading out to every direction and corners of the world.
est. 2006 - is quite obvious, no need for explaination.
The Blueish Purple colour - represents peace and harmony.
The Gold colour - represents the fruitfulness of our outcome.

Did I leave anything unexplained? I hope not. Hmmm, the post sounds quite serious. =P Okay, what do you guys think? If you all like it, leave your email in the comments, I'll send you guys a copy to use!

hehe...i'm supposed to b writing this post long long ago..but then was kinda bz...so this post is a bit belated. ;p

really miss u guys! was so happy to see u guys again that saturday! can u believe it? seyin eve and i went to mng in kl plaza at 10am that day!hehe...it was the MNG sale! :) how come we so kiasu about sales...but when it comes to studies wise, we're not kiasu at all?hehe ;p we looked for clothes inside out in that mng...trying not to miss anything.wah, one time try clothes (in fitting room) only can take in 5 pieces of clothes...stress!but we managed to buy some pieces in kl plaza...the shopaholic of the year is eve. she the most 'keng' one....the nite before that she already booked 8 pieces of baju from mng :)

neways, guess wat?after kl plaza, we went to lot 10's mng...n there...we bought other tops :) hehe...we headed to times square's mng for our last mng trip. yay!so happy i found the top i wanted! thanx girls! u guys are the best! cant believe we took a monorail all the way to times square, bought something n came back to kl plaza again..hehe. so fun! :) havent had so much fun in so long! really gonna miss u guys when u guys go overseas....

after all the shopping..wen hao picked us up for lunch, where we met up with jay on the way. we ate at this yummy yummy shop in jalan alor. the fishball noodles were really good! n plus all the delicious yummy yummy food there.think of it now oso feel like going there to eat again..hehe. the food was good..but i must comment on their toilets. they are very scary la. when i flushed the toilet...wah!omg...the water came pouring down from above it's tank!luckily i managed to run out in time!or not i think i will be wet from head to toe wit dirty toilet water.super scary..haha.

we headed back to times square after our stomachs were filled. our plans were to watch "surf's up", but no tickets...so no movie. we decided to go borders. after ransacking all their books n magazine, we carried them all to starbucks to read.haha. this is the first time i'm doing this in borders, n it's actually very fun!seyin, after u come back from aus..we go borders together k ;) we made so much noise there, i think the ppl around us could not concentrate on their books.n can u imagine, we even stole somebody's seat. haha...no la..that was an accident, thought he left d..mana tau he actually went to the toilet n came back. ;p

chuen n suetmay came at tea time..sorry u guys...that i couldnt stay for dinner...but glad u guys had good food :)

we all met up for supper in devi's corner that nite. everyone was so tired..especially suet may...but it was very very fun. miss u guys loads.donno where else i can find friends like u guys...everything oso can talk about..everything oso can laugh about.aussie ppl..cant wait til u guys come back again. uk ppl....i'm already missing u guys even thou i can see u guys in the weekends, cant imagine when u guys leave to uk...will miss u guys even more.

Big Apple, Donuts & Coffee..

Delicious donuts located in The Curve.. as recommended by Li.

Sometime last week Li told me that she found a shop that sold really really good donuts!! From the way she described it and the fact that she asked her brother to get more donuts the very next day tells me that boy, it must be really good. So when I made a visit to the curve on Saturday, I dragged Kenn to Big Apple to sample some. Thanks to it's famous neighbour, The Eden, we didn't have much trouble locating the shop.

It's a pretty new shop (I think) and it doesn't have many choices compared to the famous Dunkin Donuts.. I bought a box of 12 and I took home almost all the flavors available on the counter except the durian flavor, but it tastes really good. The donut have a lighter texture compare to Dunkin's.. in fact my first bite reminded me of the 50cents sugar coated donut I used to eat in Petaling Street during my high school days, and that's the reason I loved it ;p

You should check it out one day ;p I heard there's in outlet in Seremban too..ask Li and Shang for more info!

Unleash The Inner Mongolian...

Do not be frightened by the title. It was just something that struck my mind and was probably inspired by Fung Hang Lit in Lethal Powers of Weapons and Love (correct ah jay?).

Right, on to business. Wen Hao took Jay, Evie and I to Jalan Pudu for steamboat and quite honestly, I wasn't looking forward to it because...er because... of the name... Mongolian... I don't have any prejudice against Mongolians just to make it clear but there's something uneasy about the name of the Restaurant...Inner Mongolian Restaurant... maybe its just me.

The first thing we learnt is if you want to eat there, you should have at least one person that understands/ speaks Mandarin or else be forced to use hand gestures like Wen Hao. Ha ha darn funny but thanks to Evie and Jay, we managed. When the waitress poured the ching tong (clear soup), I was like... oh no... It was white in colour like milk with dates and whatever not floating in it...then we tasted it and then... WOW!

WOW! WOW! It was glorious... The taste of the soup. Its more herby than the normal steamboat we have say in Klang but somehow, it was very wholesome and I actually felt good after drinking it. We had the whole selection of fishballs, meatballs, beefballs, fu chuk, vege, pork slices, beef slices, chicken slices, egg tau foo, mee etc... The best was the fish balls. They don't come in your conventional shape because they have some meat in them. Yummy!

My conclusion is that KL does have something worth the traffic jams and the hustling bustling after all. For 22.80 RM per person, it was more than worth it. I just wished I had a 5th stomach to finish up the left over soup ha ha.

Excavated Treasures...

As I was scouring through the photos Evelyn just passed to me, I came across this video. It was taken in the train on our way to Singapore...

It involves me, trying very hard (I know I won't make it as an MC, for sure!) . Everyone else, making a lot of noise. Chun Peng acting blur, and Wen Hao shy in front of the camera. Boy, were we a ruckus in the train. I can imagine the looks of the pissed-off uncles and aunties in the same cabin. =P

And some other photos to show that Makan Club in indeed alive, and we, even individually, still keep the Makan Club spirit to take photos of our food before we eat. Kinda like prayer before food... =PDrooling yet? Keep the Makan Spirit up!

The Sauce

I find this the hardest part of making this meal so I prefer to do this first.

1) Chop 2 large onions into thin rings

2) Slice 3 pieces of ham into strips

3) Defrost/buy some sotong and prawns and cut them up

4) Add some cooking oil into a pot and toss in the onions. Let them fry awhile

5) Throw in the ham, sotong and prawns. Let them fry awhile

6) Add a teaspoon of salt and taste to make sure its not too salty/too bland

7) Pour in one jar of cream sauce mix(you can get this anywhere, I used Leggo brand) and stir

8) Cut one block of Mozarella cheese into half and throw one half in. (Warning!!!If you live with weight conscious people, you can ignore this step or lie to them)

9) Stir, stir and stir until well mixed!

Oh by the way, I think my sister has a weird nail condition on her left big thumb. Its too large to be a splinter haemorrhage. Wonder what it is? Any opinions soon-to-be-docs?

The Pasta

I don't think I need to tell you how to cook pasta because you just boil it. I come from a Spaghetti family so I used spaghetti. You can use any pasta but generally, I think the sauce works well with spaghetti, fettucine and linguini. You can even mix both types.

The Bread

Garlic bread really really tastes good with this so just hop to a shop and pick any type of garlic spread. Apply it to white bread or wholemeal bread, roast/toast it till crispy.

This has got to be the best curry mee you will ever find!!! Funny thing is everytime I go back to Ipoh, I rarely go to Old Town so thank God my uncle had a sudden craving for curry mee or else I would have forgotten all about this place. We were there at 9am and by 10am, there were no more mee or siew yoke. Absolutely fabulous!

hello!wei, makanclub is still around la..hehe..sorry,hav been really busy with uni stuffs,...so didnt get to post up any of our outings. we actually went to quite a few places to eat recently..hehe. thanx to seyin!...who made the efford to post up most of our makanclub outings. n in seremban it's not that bad after all....there are many places to eat there too. seremban is famous for their 'siew hai'...hmmm,i don really know wat's it called in english..is it called roasted crabs?haha...but it's super delicious!hey, when u guys come back in winter from oz land....let's go for a crab eat out in seremban!:)

hellooooo peeps! yes, makanclub in malaysia isnt dying ... it's just some of them here, despite being on the longest vacation ever, never found the time to upload some pics of our makan outings. and me here, dying to watch "Music&Lyrics" which in fact is already sitting in the DVD-drive, decided i shall take bit time off to post up lots and lotsa pics to make u guys over there in oz js a wee bit jealous, js to counter christine's yummylooking pics, and of course most importantly to clarify that we are still very much alive and kicking!

I think it's been pretty much established that our makanclub has become defunct based on the miserable number of posts dedicated to the one thing we promised to uphold on that fateful day at shobu shobu (or whatever that steamboat place we had our first makanclub outing in is called. I know it starts with an s, ends with a u and has a b somewhere in between) - food. It's like we've all turned anorexic.

As always, I will attempt to bring life into our once vibrant newsletter with whatever crap I can muster over the next few minutes. I quite honestly have no idea what the point of this post is going to be as yet. Hmm..it's coming, don't worry.

I suppose I could talk about our slow decline from cooking daily to not more than 4 times a week. Bear in mind we started out with good intentions. Heck, we even had a menu stuck to our refrigerator complete with the teams involved in cooking and washing everyday.

These days we just buy what we think we'll be cooking over the week with no menu in mind and randomly assign teams to cook and clean. Which obviously didn't work too well because it's a Thursday and we have nothing in our refrigerator save for some nectarines, fresh milk, 1 cookie which Steph bought like 2 months ago but has refused to eat because it sucks and my 3/4 full box of cereal which if memory serves me right will be expiring sometime this weekend.

So basically we've gone from planning a menu for everyday of the week save for Saturdays and Sundays to cooking 3 nights a week. First we were like "oh, let's scrap cooking on Fridays because we DESERVE to eat out after a long week." Now it's "We can't possibly cook on Thursday nights! Thursdays are such long days for us and we come back so tired!" (our last lecture ends at 5, followed by extra sessions for IMU students from 5.15 to 6.15pm which is seriously TORTURE I TELL YOU TORTURE. It's almost as bad as having to eat pork.) Simple arithmetic will tell you that we now only cook 3 nights a week and that I believe will soon change as Shiau Cern and I have decided to start attending bible study in church on Wednesday nights leaving us with little time to eat, let alone prepare dinner.

Now we know why companies like maggi mee, indomee and Yun Nam Hair Regeneration Centres are thriving.

I just thought I'd take some time to boast about some of my other accomplishments. (apart from ironing, which I totally rock at)

1. I can cook! And I'm talking raw eggs to saliva-inducing cheese-filled fluffy omelette kind of cooking ok. None of that microwave crap.

2. I obviously can iron.

3. I can work a washing machine.

4. I can wake up on time. Everyday. Over the past one month, Christine has only had to knock on my door ONCE to wake me up. The rest of the days I'm either the earliest or second earliest to wake up. Yes I know, I rock.

5. I can er drink juice everyday. Ok fine I've run out of accomplishments for the time being.

Give me a few more months and I'll add

6. Cook a gourmet meal for 10.

7. Bake banana cake for Steph.

8. Clean up vomit Steph spews all over the wall.

and

9. Run faster than Steph when she chases me down the block for doing number 7.

to the list.

I’ve vowed to popularize my other name “Jonathan” when I get to Melbourne, considering the fact that it is difficult for new people to remember what is my name & how to pronounce it properly. But let me tell you something that you guys back home wouldn’t expect.

Since we settle down in International House (place where we stay) we’ve been meeting new faces and introducing ourselves. Since it is difficult for people to remember Chun Peng’s name as Chun Peng, one day Ganesh just introduced CP as Jason (which for your info, Jason is a name that CP chose to have when he was young). Next person who helped CP in his introduction was Darren. Follow by me.

In less than a week since we got here, CP has gotten used to introducing himself as Jason. One day, a girl from US called him “Jason! Jason!” and CP just walk unaware that he was called, until we told him that the Jason that the girl was calling was referring to him. Now, not only that he has to continue to get used to introducing himself as Jason, he also has to get used to people calling him by his other name & respond to it.

Guys, so yah. That’s the new update of our friend named Jason. Such an adorable name right? Hehe. Looking forward to this Saturday’s dinner. We’re planning to go out and get a proper dining since it’s CNY’s eve. To all the makan clubers, check out all the yummy choc that we’ve been eating since we come to Melbourne in my blog. It will make you salivate non-stop. Lay In, Se Yin & Jennifer, when are you guys coming over? Winter? Easter? Su Chuen is coming over to Melbourne for 4 days during Easter. Let me know your plans k. Still considering if I should fly back during winter. Miss home so much! Anyway, Happy Chinese New Year!!!!

Makan Monday

Let me start this account by saying that everything did not go as smoothly as i had hoped on Monday. Well, if all of us remember target number 1 which was Sarawak Laksa and Kon Loh Mee, it sort of happened but didn't. This is because Restoran Gembiralah! Haiyo... the stall doesn't open on Monday and i didn't know. So sorry people!!! Anyway, we had to settle for second best Sarawak laksa and noodles at the opposite shop and second best tastes like.... second best.

After that, Li Yeen, Se Yin and I went to this baking shop to pick up butter and self raising flour for our scones. They didn't have fresh milk so I lead them to this sundry shop where we got conned. RM 4.80 for fresh milk!!! I usually buy mine from Pasaraya TTDI for RM 3.80! But the guys were waiting for us in Wen Hao's car so yeah, we paid anyway. Sigh... and a bumpy breakfast comes to an end.

We reached my house and proceeded to bake the scones which morphed from its normal round contours to a myriad of shapes under our fingers. There was a big J, voodoo doll, hearts, mickey mouse and even, a pieces of s#!t. Ha ha, just what we need to overcome our not so smooth start. With renewed spirits, we plunged head first into chinese cooking with a "Just do it" attitude. While the girls fussed around the kitchen, the boys poured their heart and soul into folding wantan and crabsticks to be fried.

This is a list of what we cooked:

1) Fried vegetables
2) Sweet and sour pork
3) Curry chicken
4) Fried wantan crabstick
5) Seaweed soup

Personally, I felt the best dish was no. 2 by Tham Li Yeen!!! Really yummy!!! We really must start giving prizes to the best chef from now on ha ha. Kenn Foong and William came along and 'wa la' then there was ice cream for the scones and music to serenade us while we cooked.

Makan Monday really ended deliciously, gob smackingly well despite its starting. As all of us crowded around the island in my kitchen devouring our creations, I just realised its not how well we cook that makes a meal really tasty but the people we share it with.

BAK-KUT-TEH SUNDAY

Of course, everyone had been craving for bakkuteh for some time already. But it was quite a last minute thing, when lay in and i suddenly decided we should have sunday bakkutteh bfast only on friday. And we quickly spread d word around, after our host in Klang mr. hau chun confirmed he was free on sunday morning.

So all of us hadta force ourselves up early on a lazy sunday mornin ...just to satisfy our sudden bakkuteh crave. :P

Jay, Wenhao, woonlee, li and myself departed from IMU while darren,kenn&lay in from kepong. We were all supposed to meet hauchun after the "2nd toll". but because we were a bit off schedule so told hauchun to come out later, i think he dozed off.. ekeke. nevertheless we still got to enjoy our famous klang bakkuteh.

MAKAN CLUB WENT INTERNATIONAL!!! [part 2 - The Return Of The Gobblers]

since i wrote part 1, to maintain the style of writing and level of critisism, i guess i'll just to write part 2 as well. anyways, the night of the first day didn't end just like that. we went to a bar 5 doors away to watch an 'interesting' match between arsenal and man-u. the 2-1 result was not what that matters, it's the fact that the bar charges $3.5 SD for a can of coke! my gosh! and to find out that there is a shop in Sin Lim Square that sells coke for only 60 cents the next day... AAARGGGH!

and that's where we were headed to after the girls cooked scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast! was delicious! Sin Lim is a whole building filled with gadgets and computer stuff selling at a ridiculously low price. 4 of us bought high speed SD cards with 2G space for only $37.90 SD!!! tempted now? but it's best that u act like rich b@$+@rD$ there becos the uncles(shop owners) will simply just ignore you if they find out that you are actually just checking out prices... sigh...

and off we went to orchard road to shop, shop, shop! but first, we ate at the Village (ppl in Adelaide must be rejoicing, as there is a restaurant for villagers here...) which was actually a former Marche in the Heeren... according to rumours, the Marche there has moved to Vivo City... but anyways, the Village serve the same food as Marche, so no harm... with filled bellies, we went around orchard road shopping! i can't recall anything super special mentioning here, besides the fact that singapore's economy boost now is solely due to the 3 girls we have in this group... =P

and then there's dinner time in Fish and Co. we fell in love with the services provided by the waiters here, and wh fell in love with 'Marie', a waitress whose name is simply a creation by cp and kenn, and that is rated PRETTY by all of us... he'd drop a fork and ask her for one, go figure the reason... =P and there we gave evie a surprise birthday celebration, which is a small part of a larger celebration back in m'sia, which i hope evie will give details later... there was fireworks and Fish n Co gave her their signature birthday song... too bad there was no more scoop between wh and marie... and more shopping cos the girls spotted a Zara nearby...

after about 45 minutes shopping, we took a bus to the Esplanade, a huge durian split into 2, which is going to house The Phantom Of The Opera in March... we tried to check out the place where boys hang out to break dance, but it was too far into the night, and there was only 1 group left... so we decided to just head over to the Merlion to snap photos, and we did, for 30 minutes just between the bridge from the durians and the Merlion. then we took a bus back to the Inn...

back at the inn, after freshening up, we were challenged to a game of foosball by the receptionist, the not so cute one... i was chosen to be the traitor where else kenn n cp was in the same team... but due to the hacking skills of the receptionist, kenn n cp lost, and they had to give him a prize of a bottle of 100 plus... the night did not end so early... we went to a 24 hour mall called Al-Mustafa that was only 8 minutes walk away! we were awed by the amount the stock they keep from groceries to cameras, to watches, to handphones, to toys and computer stuff to clothes! is was all there, whatever you need, sort of like a pasar malam indoor with air con, but too messed up for our liking... but good to check it out for experience sake... =P then, we retreated and packed for our last day out...

the last day was the most profitable for singapore as we came back with bags and bags of stuff from Queensway. there, it is famous for cheap shoes and sporting equiptment! and that is where we had the famous Katong Laksa! it was so tasty that all of us could see our faces in the bowl after we finished the soup! and we only need to eat it with spoon, perfect for lazy ppl... =P then we went over to Ikea to have swedish meatballs and smoked salmon, which in my opinion was heaven! that was the last stop before we head home...

we had an interesting experience heading home, to rush all the way through immigration and to rush back into the bus again, and managed to save RM 50 in the process, but it was exhilarating and great fun! the bus driver back to KL used to be a race driver in my suspicion cos it only took him 3.5 hours to reach KL!!! Amazing!!! but we all reached save and sound, in one piece, remembering the great fun we had...

looking forward for another international makan club trip! till then, if i missed out anything, do add in the comments so that ppl that was not with us can share the laughter we had! will post pictures as soon as i get them!

ahem.. haha.. as to clear the air, on behalf of the villaageverynicehowmuch inhabitants.. we do cook! apart from the frozen stuffs and junk food. haha.. but you must understand that to take makan club international, we will be needing the financial means as well (we do welcome any form of sponsorship whether in the form of cheque, cash or credit card, thank you!).. and of course the TIME! haha.. we have orientation from 9.30-4.30pm every single day.. and u know how early the shops close here.. so we have limited resources THAT's why our cooking has been limited to frozen food. haha.. but yesterday! aha........ we had our very first, closest to home food...............

wh: anyway, as mentioned above, we have taken Makan Club to Singapore, the first time where we will be recognised by the eyes of the world. The whole idea of going to Singapore was to explore it. But looking at what we have done for the past 2 days, the output of our cash is contributed to the Singapore's Food & Beverages Industries... eh... i'm not talking till the rest of you start talking...

evie: let's see what we have done so far...

the first meal was in delifrance for breakfast when we arrived in Singapore... this was to satisfy our hungry stomach due to sleepless nights by worrying about the unsafe rumours of the train slinding off track... ok, it's just jay n evie... cp slept like a log as ususal... and then there was this train announcer-captain dude who has an errie-slow voice while speaking bahasa baku... ask cyin to immitate him for further details...

spoiler: *cp is being challenged by an ang-moh in pool as we are typing this... we wish him all the best... the ang-moh seemed pretty good!*

anyways, back to the food... delifrance wasn't any different from m'sia's... no comments from anyone... their coffee was bottomless tho...

moving on, we found a backpacker's inn in which already booked... we checked into INN CROWD. it is in little india and it is indeed quite nice... kenn foong and wh found their cute inn receptionist... evie wasn't jealous tho... ok, it is a nice place, with not only cute guys, but in has free internet, foosball table and a pool table as u all would hav already know...

the first destination was to sentosa... chants for Subway was heard from wh since the wee hours of morning... and we indeed had that for lunch... (jay: subway singapore is rotten! they only let you choose 2 types of sauces, unlike the unlimited choices u get in m'sia... wh: it is X-ed!)

anyways, cp bought honeydew ice blended from coffee bean, which was nice! oooh, an u guys must try the LUGE when ever u guys visit sentosa! we went 3 times!!! visited the underwater world and watch fat dolphins jump as well.. (cyin: no la!!! cute dolphins! u should say it's cute PINK dolphins!!! kenn: i feel conned!) oh oh oh! wh almost peed inhis pants in the cable car ride! it was high!!! it stopped in the middle a couple of times as well!!

then the drizzle drove us back to the main island, where we went straight to Bugis Junction to have our all u can eat korean bbq dinner! ALL U CAN EAT MAN!!! WOOO!!! it's at Seoul Garden! we ate till the place was closing, and we still stocked up on food and dessert! everyone was filled to the brim...

then we went to Clarke Quay! we saw this bar called Clinic! it's setting was like a ward, with white screens and chairs at hospital beds... who would want to be hanging out in a clinic? it still has great business tho... we walked thorugh fountains and did not get wet! figure that out!!! and there was this bar in which we don't remember the name, which shows lame jokes on plasma! eg: layin's fav: q:what's the difference between ooooh! and AAAAH!? a: 3 inches! q: why doesn't sant claus have children? a: becos he only comes once a year and it's down the chimney. (super lame~) q: what is the difference between a pregnant woman and a wine bottle? a: u can unscrew a wine bottle. oook... we got enough lame oredi... we we so stunned by lame jokes lamer than chuens that we ended up taking the last train home...

Hey my fellow eaters,

This is a letter I’m writing to make known the current inactive state of our club recently. It has come to my attention that eating has no longer remained the top priority in our fellow makan clubers… I blame all this on IMU for ripping off our passion and desire to feast & violating our pledge to meet up at a venue every week to satisfy our hunger strike.

Since our days in IMU Bukit Jalil have come to an end, I suggest that our dear president, if still desire to maintain your throne as one, to come out with new venues, plans, agendas & propositions for 2007. We urgently need to call for a meeting to check on our current eating status, & treat those who have wandered off from the path of eating.

The secretary clearly ain’t doing her job nowadays considering she is leaving soon. I as one of the member of this club is giving you a warning, doesn’t mean you are leaving, you can allowed to leave all members of this club unnoticed of current events (if there’s any).. Considering 2007 has begun, I felt that you should issue a annual report as to how we progress since we have started somewhere around mid of last year.

On behalf of all members, I am voicing out our concern of our future state as a makan clubers. I suggest an immediate plan has to be birth since some of our members are leaving tomorrow to the land down under, to join some of the Australians as villagers… I sincerely send my condolences to my beloved makan clubers who has to live in such an abandoned and sadden situation. Where grasses and ferns are as tall as their home, where sheeps & cows are their main mode of transportation, where internet & electricity are so sparse, & sky scrapers are no where to be seen. You are always welcome to Melbourne & I personally will host you with great comfort & luxury to the best I could afford.

But anyway, it is my joy to congratulate those who make it in their exams & my deepest prayers to Chuen’s visa to come miraculously from God tomorrow. To Chris Chuen Christine & Steph, I wish you all goodbye & til we meet again somewhere in Aussie, let us just hold fast to the hope we profess, anticipating that 2007 will bring fruitfulness to our lives in Aussie.

As for others, to those who are going to Singapore with me, let’s just spend this quality time together, building & fostering our friendship so that when we do part in future, our friendship will not be shaken by time zone differences & distance. To all, I thank you for the time & joy spent together in my journey in IMU Bukit Jalil. Studying medicine will never be the same without experiencing it with you guys.

Newsflash : Jay Got Stoned

So we all trotted down to Renaissance last Saturday to celebrate Se Yin's (and her sister's) coming of age. In true MakanClub fashion, we created quite the ruckus in Temptations that night, as I'm sure the many other patrons there who were looking forward to a quiet dinner can attest to. Some of the highlights (among others) of the night were

1) Discovering that I am the QUEEN of de-shelling lobsters.

2) Jay the once-normal-but-obviously-mutated Cow has 8 stomachs as opposed to the 4 we all thought he (and all other normal cows) had.

3) Chocolate fountains are the devil. It makes the girls fat and reduces the guys to giggly 5 year old girls.

Case in point :

Me : Omg, the chocolate fountain looks so tempting. I think I'm gonna get myself more choco goodies. Wanna go?
Steph : I'm full, no thanks. I like salad. (because Steph is the only girl I know who makes a beeline for the salad bar whenever confronted with large scale buffets serving lamb,beef,sashimi and fountains (ok fine, one fountain) of chocolatey goodness. Ok la, she did eat all the other stuff but seriously, I totally ignore salad bars whenever I go for buffets as I'm sure everybody else does. Right?)
Me : Do you think anybody would ever stand by the chocolate fountain, continuously dipping their stuff in until they're satisfied just to save multiple trips to the fountain of chocolatey goodness?
Steph : haha I don't think anybody would wanna embarass themselves that bad.
Me : haha yeah you're probably right. Omg, what would you do if you saw somebody not only hogging the chocolate fountain but dipping his/her stuff in after every bite?
Steph : Ew GROSS!! See, that is why I never eat lok-lok.
Kenn : *comes back to table laughing*
Me and Steph : What's up?
Kenn : Check out the chocolate fountain.
Me and Steph : *looks in that direction to find Wai Ming and Jay giggling by the chocolate fountain doing what we were just discussing *
(In their defense, they weren't dipping their sticks in after every bite for you know, universal precaution. Dr FA would've been so proud. )

After stuffing ourselves silly, we somehow managed to waddle our way (in cars of course) to 7ate9 at the Ascott. Nice place, that. The highlight of our little visit to this place, was as you were probably expecting, the reason for the title of this post. It was a wonderful night all in all. The food was good,

the company awesome, and we all came back with sweet memories of a great night out.

I thus end this post with a picture of my good friend, Jay. Stoned. This, my friends, is the funniest thing since Fatimah came back.

ps. He wasn't really drunk la. This was just an accidental shot he took while attempting to show ChunPeng how the red eye reduction feature in his camera works. And it evidently does, very well indeed. Only thing it makes you look super stoned in the process. :P Don't kill me, Jay! Not that it would matter to you because you're obviously going to take this very well but Steph was the one who brought my attention to this picture so er, if anything you should get back at her too. because nobody's interested in eating anymore (not your fault, ms president. don't worry, my promise of not dethroning you still stands. You know how busy everyone is what with EOS coming up and everything), allow me to bring a little life into our pathetic EOS5-ridden lives by doing what I do best. Telling jokes that are so funny it has a sensory afferent nerve (LaJ nerve) of its own. i would like to apologize for not arranging for any makanclub outings. really sorry guys... things hav been really bz in uni. but i really hope we can go on a makan trip next week, n i really hope this time everybody can make it...coz the last few trips (that were very long ago), very lil ppl turned up. i will plan one for the following week k..hehe...but so far, any ideas on wat u guys feel like eating? :) who's up for italian food? :) actually the place always doesnt really matter right, it's the company u guys make matters most...coz hanging out with u guys really makes a difference.it's super fun! everytime we'll hehehaha til our stomach feels funny ;p so that's y i really do hope that everyone can turn up this time.

Dear Ms President,

It has come to my attention that the Makan Club which we so zealously created almost half a year ago is currently on the path to becoming a distant memory of the past. It pains me to say this, but I believe some of our members have stopped believing in the cause of our Makan Club and thus chosen to move on to other less important past-times, like studying for EOS 5. Which is most worrying as we have never been known to choose studying over eating.

In all humility, I would like to request that you plan a Makan Club outing within the next 2 weeks. May I also ask that you issue a formal threat to those who choose not to attend said outing. I speak on behalf of Jay and Se Yin when I say that we are sincerely sorry for blaming you for the inactivity of the Makan Club on the 26th of September, 11 am at the Darts Room. I would also like to apologize for threatening to start a riot (recruiting Jay and Se Yin who happened to still be in the Darts Room) outside IMU with the intention of dethroning you as president of the Makan Club. We spoke too soon. We have since realized that the Makan Club would not be what it is today if it wasn't for your able planning and leadership skills.

I end this letter thanking you in advance for your invaluable service to the Makan Club. I promise I won't threaten to start a riot in order to replace you again. However, I will not be responsible for anything Jay and Se Yin might have already planned.

it's been more than 2 months now that the makanclub is 'officially open'....n i'm so happy that we've been to so many places so far.somehow it feels as if it's yesterday that jay n chuen taxed me to tell me that there was a blog on the makanclub.but yea..it's been 2 months already, n we've been to so many places to eat...from mamak stalls to italian food (pizza!) hehe. it's been super fun! so many great memories.... the juicy o jien in that far away restaurant, "eclipse for ellipse" ,the cute jay n darren "couple" in mizi shabu shabu, ribena special at murni's, brave eve for that dare in luna, bad service at madam kwan's, delicious beef n pork ball noodles, jay's b**b theory, CS!!!, the bazooka team!, and the brave christine fighting for our rights in marco's!wow,wat an experience huh?..hehe.

n for all the reports written...good job u guys!*clap*clap* keep it up!hehe..let's continue our search for good food :)

one day, in a faraway land in IMU Bukit Jalil, there were some
8 cheerleaders, who had nothing to do after practice (we ARE in
selectives after all). so guess what.. we decided to go out and
eat! *big surprise*

haha.. initially suggestions were hawker centres, pizza hut, the
more we talked the further the destination became until we finally
decided on Marco's pizza! somemore hau chun said got discount if
got UOB credit card. so we were all excited whenn chun peng had
one!

off we (consists of me, liyeen, seyin, hauchun, chunpeng, steph,
jay and drick) went to tmn megah in search of the famous, & as u
read on, infamous Marco's pizza.

wonderfully enough when we arrived there, 2 parking lots await
us, right in front of the restaurant!! woo hoo.. thank God! we
entered, not bad.. nice decor and all. so we confirmed with the
cashier if the UOB promotion is valid and they said yes. so bla bla
bla. they took our orders.. n then!!!!! the waiter recommended
us to take the promotion **(buy 1 large pizza & get a side dish
for rm3) so of course we said yes right???!!!

so we ate.. n food was ok.. vongole a bit tooo clammish. carbonara
was pretty good. as for the pizzas.. i think i'd only give it a
65% (ngam ngam pass!!!)

and so the moment came, when it was time for us to leave
(because hauchun & hendrick were going out on a date! sounds
wrong -_-" but then they added that there were "chicks" going
along.. we gave them a really hard time on that.. hahaha.. so
u're saying we're not "chicks" la??!! :p) ok ok, so we called for
the bill la. then they didn't give us the 15%!!!! so we asked
laaaa.... n u know what they said?!!

"oh, u opted for the promotion** and then the UOB promotion
is N/A!" 8 of us.. "HUH??!!"
ok then.. recomposed ourselves.. and ask, oh then u change the
bill la to the original side dish price, and THEN u minus 15% from
there (more substantial)

u know what they said??? oh.. cannot. cos we print the bill dee..
cannot change! *bish*
8 of us.. "HUH??!! talk to your manager"

he came bck with the bill again and said.. "ok here's what we can
do, we split the bill into 2. we give u discount for the drinks & pasta.
the pizza cannot change" and they printed out 2 bills for us (I
THOUGHT THEY JUST SAID CANNOT CHANGE?? hypocrites)

so i stomped to the cashier.. bangs the table and demands
for my consumer's right (ok that was exaggerated)
i just asked, why didn't u tell us that so-called promotion
MEANS we can't get the 15% discount?! u know what the manager
said..?? (he should be FIRED immediately) ehh, other restaurants
also like that la, u cannot use a promotion with another discount..
it is written in the UOB book. (for crying out loud!! ur rm2.50
discount promotion wanna void me of getting 15% off our rm145
bill??!!) doesn't make sense right.. anyway, in the end, chun peng
said nvm, just pay la.

then i just muttered, nxt time please let your customers know..
i can't exactly remembered what he said but it wasn't pleasant so
on the way out i exclaimed at an audible voice (to the manager) i'm
NOT coming back here AGAIN! and wrote a complaint on their
feedback card.

so we left, and steph asked, so how much was it. u know that
manager!! so sneaky.. he charged us the initial amount!!! argh..
CHEAT! so we went bck in again, n he said.. oh oh it wasn't
intentional but it was written all over his face it WAS~!

ok soo.. to release our "geram-ness" we headed to play... haha..
CS!!! this time not so fun, cos got the other super "geng" ppl who
keeps changing maps AND keeps killing us.. hey, i couldn't even
move a step to pick up a gun & i died -_-" later we had our
own map so it got better hehe! we played till about 11. and jack
was abt to come join us when we left, too bad :P

wanted to go makan durians after that, but there was only one
pathetic stall at sri petaling which didn't really attract us. so
we headed home instead.

after all that's said and done. no more Marco's Pizza.. period.

Of Darts, Pingpong, CS, and more Makan!

Tuesday after patho class, someone suggested.. "Hey, let's go play cs". Somehow the word CS just caught my ear and my hands started to itch again. (hahah, talking like some cs freak now.) Well, after a short while we went on with our own stuffs and christine and liyeen had group discussion, then wenhao called and said "wana play darts anot?". knowing darts and cs are my two newfound hobbies since selectives started (only 1hr class per day!), i couldnt resist. yea, we took the little time we had to sqeeuze in ONE round of darts, while waiting for them we said - wenhao, su chuen, me (deva & christine came just in time to join too!). mm... christine started last, but came in first! :D

While we played darts, some of them played pingpong the 'super trio show style' . where u hv to say sth (eg. apparel brands) everytime u hit the ball. haha, it's really interesting, i should try to pick up pingpong too... but i seriously sucked the last time i played it (secondary... 2?) hhehe.

Then there was a "to-go-cs-or-not" talk for a while..... cos jay had guy netball at 6! well in the end, we decided that just standing there thinking wouldnt get us anywhere, so in the end 6 of us went anyway-- chuen, li, wenhao, christine, deva & cyin(me).

It was fun!!! i joined the BAZOOKA team, and together with li & chuen... won over deva, christine & wenhao's team!! (and we wouldnt call it a last game until we won 100 times :p) hahaha, well, we did tipu abit by killing them while wenhao was teaching christine.. but i bet we still would've won either way :Þ

Of course, after using up all our energy in cs, we had to get some food (wat else).. we went to Steven's Corner at OUG. christine & i had maggi goreng(i also had roti canai), i think suchuen also had maggi goreng?, deva had some tose & garlic naan, liyeen had garlic naan, wenhao had tandoori chicken and few more stuffs. mm, the food were all good! well, one thing we noticed was that their limau ais and teh o ais limau tastes different, somehow :? Haha, i shall not remind u guys about waht the "plaaaap" sound on the table was, and how it missed by roti canai by just a few cms...

COUNTERSTRIKE!!!!!!

Be afraid, be very afraid, because now not only do we eat like gilababis, but we shoot like them too. That's right. Mess with us and we will not hesitate to ransack your house (gobbling up anything remotely edible. Yes, that includes your kokokrunch.) AND shoot everything we see around us, Counterstrike style. You will never discover our true identities because we will be donned in hoods and shades, Counterstrike style. During our Counterstrike rampages, (which for your sake, I hope you will never have to experience) we will all be dressed as men (because there aren't any female characters in Counterstrike, duh.), making it almost impossible to distinguish between the sexes. I say almost because if you are lucky enough to survive our onslaught of gunfire, you will be able to hear high-pitched squeals of delight just before we stealthily leave your bullet-ridden place of residence, which will obciously come from the males. The photos you have seen of us in the previous posts were not really us. They were merely geeky medical students which we abducted and forced at gunpoint, Counterstrike style, to pose with happy smiles in order to conceal our true identities.

You are horribly mistaken if you think that eating has taken a backseat now that we've discovered this new hobby. Quite the contrary, our appetites have grown by leaps and bounds as running around with bazookas (which only liyeen and I have because we are part of the bazooka team) for hours on end causes us to work up an enormous appetite as you can only imagine.

For those of you who missed shooting practice today, the president herself would like to see you in person. Please prepare a written statement to explain your absence, and bring along a witness in case your written statement sucks. Do not take this lightly as the president is not an easy woman to please and she will not hesitate to blow you to smithereens if you come up with stupid excuses (eg.having lecture) for your absence. Don't forget, she owns a bazooka.

Post-Renal Makan

As you all know, M2/04 recently celebrated our new found freedom from exams/stress/crappy lectures/MM for PBLs etc. on the 7th of July. As most of the makan club members were busy with their own agendas (you traitors!! we took attendance so you have to write a formal letter to Ms. Pres explaning your absence! :p), the remainder of us (liyeen,seyin,jay,me,chunpeng) decided that we would still go and have the time of our lives despite being ditched and ended up in Kim Gary's MV with a whole bunch of our batchmates (too many to name!). Se Yin and I had cheese baked rice (Yum!). Li Yeen had some noodle thingy. Err...sorry Jay, I kinda forgot what you had! :) Poor Chun Peng had to wait ages for his food cuz they somehow didn't see his order. His food only came when everyone had finished eating. He has some spicy noodle thingy which was put in a bowl that looked exactly like a birdbath. Seriously....and he had to eat with a ladle. Weird.
The interesting event that occured during the makan was our topic of conversation. Jay presented a theory about what guys look at first when they see a girl. I think Jay should write a thesis about this....it would make headlines! Anyways, I shall not mention 'the thing' (or should I say things?!) that they look at cuz it would be totally unladylike of me....Ask Jay or CP if you wanna know. But all in all, the conversation was very enlightening and gave us 3 girls some insight on how shallow guys really are!! Hahaha jk jk. And it also gave us some tips on what to wear/do (dunno what word to use cuz it's complicated) if we wanna attract a guy's attention.
After dinner, we went to watch RV. It was hilarious!

Mi Daging

After CSU today, 8 of us hopped on to Sri Petaling for some beef noodles. There was no air conditioning, no nice plush seats, no cute waitresses (added in for the guys), no psychedelic wall decorations and to sum it all, nothing fancy about the place. Just your usual old, slightly unkept hawker restaurant accompanied by the usual fauna, one of which crawled out of the hole in the middle of the table and freaked the daylights out of me.

Having said that, as much as the Makan Club is concerned, I have always wondered what will happen if we ever stumble upon a Makan place that is not up to par. Then again, I don't think we need to worry because as usual, our instincts were right. Never mind the unfancy place together with Mr. Cock Roach because the noodles were great! As soon as the guy plonked my large beef balls mihun soup in front of me, all the unfanciness evaporated away and we all tucked into our noodles happily.

Be it kon-loh wantan mee, lo shi fun or mi hun soup, I simply loved the way the beef tastes which is just nice and not too strong. The beef balls were a nice chewy texture and Christine even had black pepper in hers which was super! To complement, we also had yong tau foo which was ok-lah. I have no complaints except that they put my LARGE mihun into a MEDIUM bowl which means less soup so to compensate, I ate extra fast to prevent the soup from being absorbed into my noodles.All in all, we had a great time with the beef noodles without the expense of burning more holes in our already holey pockets!

I'm gonna give my two cents worth on what I'd like to call 'The Ultimate Makan Club Day". We had not one, but TWO outings all within a span of 6 hours. Now if that's not a way to release all the pent up repro stress I don't know what is. Hey, I've got an idea, why not take it all the way and go on a Makan Club Weekend after Renal? You think it's a good idea too? I KNEW IT!! You can thank me later. :P

First off, I'd like to echo Evelyn's comments regarding the service at Mid Valley's Madam Kwan's - It was horrible. If the star system was applied to restaurants I'd give Madam Kwan's like, a 1/4 of a star. And the 1/4 is for at least getting our orders right. The waitress taking our orders reminded me alot of Avril Lavigne actually - angry and grumpy, with a look that says "I hate you. Go away." I almost expected her to burst into song, singing "Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?" after Steph asked if she could cancel the coke that she had ordered 3 minutes earlier. I guess she wasn't into singing in front of a crowd that evening, (again, much like Avril whose voice seems to make one question her singing abilities everytime she performs in public) as she answered with a curt "Sorry cannot change, make already."

I know you're all dying to know what Steph, LiYeen and I ordered so let me just tell you so you don't have to beg, alright - we shared a plate of fried rice and mushroom chicken noodles. The fried rice was alright, like any kind you can get off the streets, only 2.5x more expensive. The mushroom chicken noodles is not what I would recommend to people whose stomachs resemble that of a cow's (jay). The 2 big-ass mushrooms were just about the only things that were worth noting.

Moving on, Luna Bar was a blast. I didn't expect so many people to turn up! We had an awesome time playing Pak Ku Chi (since everyone's fighting over it being either Chi Ku Pak or Ku Chi Pak, let me just standardize it once and for all la ok). The game took a more interesting turn when LiYeen suggested that the punishment for whoever loses 3 times in a row would be to go up to any guy, tell him that he's cute, and then take a picture with him. Evelyn was the first loser and was all game to carry out her punishment. To cut a short story even shorter, it didn't quite work out because the waiter said something along the lines of him being married. Having said that, kudos goes to Evie for being bold enough to do it anyway. (Although I'm thinking the alco played a part in it as well :P)

I wish I could tell you that by the end of the night everyone was pissed drunk, with the exception of me because you know, someone had to take up the responsibility of carting all the drunkards back home but alas, everyone was as sober as the noonday sun (Yes, of course I made that phrase up) and we all left for home with nothing but sweet memories of a wonderful night spent.

Hello...this is gonna be my first post for the gobble gazette and this is gonna be a report on Madam Kwan's and Luna Bar (Christine's the official reporter, but I feel that someone need to report on Madam Kwan's too...)

On Wednesday...after having a tough time deciding on which restaurant we'll try out in Mid Valley, we finally decided on Madam Kwan's.

Kenn and I have always felt that the reason customers revisit a restaurant is either because:-
a) The food is good (Obviously)
b) The Ambience
c) The service

For the case of Madam Kwan's, they only fulfilled one criteria...that's the ambience...it's creatively furnished (like the tiled mirrors) and stylish. Of course... or else the 'famous' Datin who's face Kenn saw on the newspaper before and her son won't go there to ta-pau dinner?

As for the service...all i can say is the the night shift staff is not as friendly, courteous and helpful... I believe the afternoon shift staff being nicer, if I recall correctly.

Finally the most important thing...the food...Madam Kwan serve typical Malaysian hawker style food...aka Ipoh Kuei Teow Soup, Chao Kuei Teow, Nasi Lemak, Nasi Bonjari, Laksa and so on. The food is all-right, but of course you can't compare it to the 'real' local food where you can only find at hawker centers...like those in Penang and Ipoh for example. The price is also absurdly high, if we compare it to what we can get outside...but again we're paying more for the ambience and service, we're eating in MV for pete's sake!

I ordered a Chao Kuei Teow... SeYin's fav, because she always order that when she visit Madam Kuan's, Kenn ordered a Kuei Teow Soup, LayIn and WoonLee shared a nasi lemak, SeYin took tom yam, SuetMay ordered a nasi bonjari, Wills ordered a cool dish...but kinda forgot what it's called...as for Li, Stef, Su Chuen...they're at the other end of the table, quite hard to see what exactly's the dish ;p Soli!

Later that night...around 10pm, the members of the Makan Club met up at Luna Bar to chillout. The bar...a rather exclusive one, is located on the 34th floor of Menara Pan Global (immediately opposite KL Tower). It provide a romantic view of KL night view and it's open air-ed poolside area allowed us to have a close view of KL Tower.

The service is not bad but they are very concerned about our billing system...all in a single bill or saperate bill? That's the first thing they'll ask after taking your orders.

As for the drinks...it's slightly more pricy than other bars, according to the others and if the drinks are good or not...this is the first bar I've visited, can't comment really. Haha.
Alright, I'm gonna have a bit of a problem in naming all the drinks the members ordered here...cause number one, like what Christine said it was too dark to even see the word on the menu, and secondly there were just too many of us...not to mention they have weird names. I'll try my best though...I had my first shot of tequilla (amazing I tell you, Rachel and Li taught me the proper way to drink it), Rachel had Flaming Lumbourghini, Shang had a 'walk on the beach', the guys had beers (since it's world cup time, they were too busy inside watching football), christine ordred this cool combo with baileys, cookies and creame...as for the others, I'm not really sure.

Basically it was a cool outing...I finally found out what Chi Ku Pak is and had my chance to try it out. I think i've got no skill or I'm plain unlucky that night, cause I was the first to lose 3 times in the game...in the end I have to carry out a task, that is to ask a chosen person to take a picture with me. But then my mission failed...hehe... luckily they didn't ask me to do something else ;p

hehe.. ok so the makan club kinda split for dinner yesterday
after repro exam.. most of them went to mdm kwan's!
yummy.. me chris wen hao & jay had ours @ vietnamese
kitchen in oug plaza. which we "X-ed" because of bad svc..
haha.. the food was so-so. i think the one in 1u is better :D
we had beef noodles & jay had some lemongrass chicken
rice.

later... aha!! we went to LUNA BAR... happening ler...
all of us ordered different cocktail.. then we share-share..
very colourful! haha.. this time!! we had new ppl too..
hamster, woon lee, kenn foong, rachel, manjit & suba.
in attendance: liyeen, suchuen, wenhao (ex-cos were
there), me, layin, chunpeng, steph, jay, suetmay, seyin,
evelyn, shang, anu.. (i hope i named everyone)

since i'm reporting so.. hehe.. of course i say the one
that me & layin ordered is nice! it's a luna specialty.
it's called frozen space cookie.. it's a concoction of
baileys, coffee liquer, oreo, whipped cream and ice!
really really good!! it has got to be! cos after that anu
& suba ordered the same thing.. hehe..

then we played revised chi-ku-pa (since we all don't
know what it's called) hehehe.. evie lost.. 3 times!
or shld i say shang won??!!

luna bar has nice ambience. a wee bit too dark, we had
trouble ordering cos we can't see!!!! n the candle kept
turning off.. (thks to chuen - haha) but seyin came
to the rescue with her giant self-made cigarette...
*clap clap*

oh yeah.. to all makan club members.. here's what
u need to included in your survival kit as an active
member:-

1. money (sorry we're not THAT established as yet
for ppl to recognise our stature and give us free
makan)

2. eno (knowing the amount we all tend to eat, u
might be at risk for indigestion - why did u think
we're a part of this club in the first place eh???)

3. constantly thinking of new places to go to..
one of our objectives is to discover nice & affordable
food. we will go the distance i tell u.. we will..

i guess that's abt all u need (for now) haha.. till
the nxt makan trip.. which i gather shld be shogun
where we will have our eating competition. right

makan makan at murni's

wah,murni's makan makan that day damn nice...we all ordered so much food!!!!!yum yum :) when we reached home (the b204's)..we were all very very bloated til se yin shang n i had to go for a walk in the mini park downstairs..hehe.then at home i was still too full...so i had to take that life saving eno from christine...thanx babe!:) really felt better after that.the food there was so good that we couldnt resist anything..hehe.that's y end up too full d ;p

murni's is one amazing mamak....it has too much good food...n it has nearly all sorts of food there..well,except for nana's tosei la...hehe...so cute la this mamak,here no tosei wan ;p then the drinks damn cool...well,stef says it looks like it's served in a flower pot...hehe...but it's very yummy rite? :) wah,next time we must remember to share our drinks man...so big the flower pot...not enough space in our stomach's la (eventhou' some of our stomach's bigger than the usuals..hehe ;p) got manggo special...ribena special...aiyo,talking about it now's making me a bit thirsty d..hehe.

we should go there again 1 day ya...with all the rest of the makan gang members :)

Mamak Season

I'm really sorry that i could not attend yesterday's club meeting. I think we have to make a new policy: WHOEVER ATTENDS A MEETING PLEASE BRING A CAMERA. If not we will be PICTURELESS for meetings i did not attend. Thank you Nana for being the photographer for the night.

Well, although i did not go to Murni at SS2 yesterday, but I as a member of Makan Club would like to report bout the food of the mamak i went to. It is none other than the famous Sri Steven's Corner at OUG. Here's a review of the food I tried yesterday:

Neslo and Nescafe Ais: Basically nothing special, it is available at all mamak. But i must say the neslo here is more 'kau' than usual. Maybe it's because of the amount of condensed milk they put inside but still not bad. Rating: 7/10.

Burug puyuh: In case you were wondering what kind of bird it is (for those BM blind) it is of course none other than pigeon. No, not to worry, you won't get psittacosis. It is actually fried, and i must say the aroma is better than chicken. The texture is like chicken breast but there is not as much flesh. Ultimately, it is a must try. Rating 9/10.

Cheese Naan: Ooh! Steven's Corner is famous for this little delicacy, and it never disappointed me once! Still mouth watering and cheesy! A must try! Rating: 9/10.

Tandoori Chicken: Comparatively, some say Ajimal Razim's( a mamak in Sri Petaling) is better, but to me, both tastes the same. Rating: 5/10.

Nasi Lemak Ayam: The nasi lemak here is often compared to Ajimal's also. But different people prefer different taste in their nasi lemak. The rice here is not as good as Ajimal's but the sambal here is spicier. The chicken offered here is Rendang chicken while Ajimal's is fried chicken. Which do you prefer? You make the choice! Rating: 8/10.

So as it turns out, I was unanimously (and unwillingly) voted secretary of the Makan Club. I was of course distressed as this means I have been put in the superboring position of

1. Taking attendance

2. Writing minutes (eh seriously la,I never paid attention in English class back in high school when we were being taught how to write minutes so if my minutes suck, YOU ALL HAD BETTER NOT COMPLAIN BECAUSE I WILL RESIGN AND YOU WILL BE FORCED TO HAVE THE CLUB BOZO BECOME YOUR NEW SECRETARY AND I WOULDN'T WISH THAT ON ANYONE - EVEN THE SWIMMING CLUB)

The role of the Club Bozo is take on all unwanted and temporarily vacated positions should the situation arise. Example, IF YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT MY MINUTES, I WILL RESIGN AND YOU WILL BE FORCED TO HAVE THE CLUB BOZO BECOME YOUR NEW SECRETARY AND I WOULDN'T WISH THAT ON ANYONE - EVEN THE SWIMMING CLUB.

3. Remembering what everyone ate. (which is darn hard la, firstly, because there are always more plates than there are people - we are not called the makanclub for nothing. If that isn't hard enough, I have to remember what some of you tapau-ed back for the members who couldn't make it for the meeting.) So for the sake of my rudimentary brain space, please order and tapau things which are easy to remember like say, naan or eggs. Please, for crying out loud don't go order something that sounds like wantanmeelailiuha because that would be an obvious burden on me. I believe somewhat in the theory of displacement - meaning everytime I remember something new, something else leaves and lodges itself in some deep-seated, unaccounted for space in what is probably not so important to the rest of you but is to me and my future patients - MY BRAIN. Can you even begin to imagine how many names of food would've accumulated in my brain in place of CVS, respi, haemato, GI and the lot by the end of this year?

You see, the thing about this theory of displacement is that it sneaks up on you and makes you believe that the displacement never happened. Yes my friends, the brain is a very sneaky, cunning organ. It covers up all evidence of the displacement, and you start believing that Testosterone is actually Tandoori Chicken and things like that.

Now that it's all off my chest, I shall proceed to write the minutes of our 3rd meeting.

Murni VS Mummy

As I stepped into my house today, I should have sensed something wrong but I guess my usually tip-top instincts was blunted by whiffs of .... Mummy's Curry Chicken!!! So I tell myself, just one more hour or so and I'll be enjoying myself at Murni's(SS2) with the Makan Club. I kept drumming myself with *Murni's*Makan Club*Murni's*Makan Club (608X)* to better equip myself in withstanding Mummy's Curry Chicken.

That is, until Wati(my maid) starts taking out the cutlery and arranges the plates of hot-steaming-sizzling-make-you-high rice. You know Stomp, The Musical? Exactly! First it starts subtlely, the smell. Then comes the 'thud thud' of the plates on the table. Next, throw in 'Chiang Chiang Chiang' of forks and spoons and it doesn't stop there. The smell of steaming white rice and my Mom's voice "Aiya, eat a bitla...It's not everyday I cook curry chicken. Just a bit then you go makan with your friendsla". 'BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM'

I find myself strangely unable to resist any longer and my gobbling mechanism kicked in. It was at this moment I was most vulnerable and it was at this moment, unseen hands must have tambah nasi for me. This is the result of not being able to resist the creamy, curry chicken Mummy rarely cooks. You get sucked into a Must-make-daughter-stay-at-home-and-eat-my-food conspiracy."AAAAAHHHHH" Sadly, it was too late when I realised the space designated for garlic naan and that cool nata de coco drink was invaded by curry chicken.

Sigh...Thousand apologies to the girls whom I couldn't join tonight but this is what happens when you have more stomach than brains.

hehe...actually i'm supposed to be writing the first post here...but then i came home late la last nite...so a bit tired...hehe.eh,watched x-men last nite.it's damn nice la.who said it wasn't nice?hehe....ooopppssss...supposed to b writing about makan makan stuff...

ok..let's see...this is the first time i'm writing a post...so dont laugh ar if not nice...hehe.wah,our makan club...damn fun!every wed we'll go eat somewhere in malaysia,most prob kl la.the first time we went to this steamboat place.everyone had their own pot o...hehe...so can put anything u want inside!then we ordered lots n lots of food :) we had 3 cars going to this place in puchong to eat.all in 12 of us..christine chris seyin evelyn suchuen wenhao jay darren layin reika david n i.the food was good...but the smoke...my face felt as if i was doing a facial(u know those hot steams to open up ur pores)...haha...yea...wenhao's pot la,all the steam from there float to my face..hehe.jay n darren damn cute..both of them ordered the couple set..then summore for the pic,both pose like couple...hehe ;p then eh,we must la elect a photographer...everytime must take pic of our makan makan trip :) hmmm...did we agree that jay should b the 1? :)

makan makan in town...wah,this place very far..it took us i think half an hour to reach there o...this time 9 of us went...chuen,wenhao,seyin,christine,chris,suetmay,cp,stef n i..but it paid off coz the food was good!we ordered a whole table full of food coz we damn hungry..hehe.hokkien mee,'wat tan hor',vege,'pai kuat',....n the most famous dish...the 'o jien'.wah,damn nice the o jien here...so big o...then when u bite in...so juicy...yum yum :) we loved it so much that we had to order a second plate..hehe.suet may is the best when it comes to food...n especially RICE!!!she loves rice.cant live without it.still remember the time in genting where the guys ordered a small bowl of rice for her...then she says later that she wants to change it to a big bowl n summore she doesnt need to share wit anyone...she can finish herself o..i salute wei!
the most fun part about our makan trip is when we all hehe haha about everything.i'll never forget the part where wenhao thought an ellipse was an eclipse...summore he had the hand movements for it..haha.that day we all bomb wenhao like crazy...hehehe...but lucliky he damn sporting,nvr get angry ;) then stories about csu damn funny...the part where yen wi's patient says to him.."eh,y u so ham sap one?" hehehe.if feel stress rite...must come join our makan club la...hehe haha with these ppl from stress levels of 100000 oso can become zero o :) after the food,at first we planned to go for beef noodles,but then everyone i think very full d...so we ended up going for desert in the frutti stall :) wah,the parking there very the wat lor...carpark wit meter...but the old man still collect money...sigh...nvm la...old man ma...summore better than later the car kena scratch.the tong sui's were good...but i must say,next time must remember not to order the peanut butter tong sui.i love peanut butter...but then this one damn not nice... ;p we had to end the makan makan n hehehaha early that day coz some of us had to rush home to watch american idol :)

Welcome to the very first edition of the Gobble Gazette!

Greetings, my fellow gobblers. It brings me great joy to be typing the very first post in our virtual newsletter (THAT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO CREATE, MS PRESIDENT!!) as I sit here in the comforts of my own home, in my pyjamas, no less. The creation of the Gobble Gazette signifies the beginning of a great future (food-wise) and I certainly look forward to our next Makan Club outing. Having said all that, the Makan Club is still esentially a club and what is a club without a set of stringent rules and regulations that nobody will adhere to? The swimming club, that's what we would be - which we are not. (No offense to the swimming club. That was only directed towards Steph because she doesn't want to have kids.)

Back to my point. This is a rough draft of the Makan Club rules and regulations. (the main commitee reserve the right to change, retract and break any rule we want to because we are the main committee. Deal with it.)

1. Must love food.

That pretty much sums up the rules and regulations set by the committee at this point of time.

For the time being only 2 posts have been created. At our next general meeting, we will be having an eating competition to determine the people who will be holding all the other positions. Just to brief all of you on the way we handle our biannual General meetings - positions of power are NOT, I repeat NOT, created by democratic votes, but by the amount of food which you can consume. The person who can consume the most will naturally get the highest post (president) and so on and so forth. For all intents and purposes, the rules of election will not apply to Suet May because let's face it, she would be president forever and ever if we follow the current system of election which is based on the person who can consume the largest amount of food.

As was mentioned earlier, we have only agreed on 2 positions so far and they are

Club President : Li Yeen
Club Bozo : Wen Hao

*clap clap*

These people will serve the Makan Club for a duration of 1 semester afterwhich another general election (ie. eating competition) will be held to choose the new committee.

A quick update on the places we have deemed worthy of our presence so far :

Week 1 : Steamboat place in Puchong (I forget the name.)
Week 2 : Backalley coffeeshop in Jalan Raja Laut (it has no name)

Week 3 : Currently in debate (between Murni in SS2 and some naan place in KL)
